Chapter Nine

All during work the next day, Royce found it difficult to concentrate. He kept checking the time. He also checked his text messages. He sent a note to Jacob, asking if he still planned to come over for dinner. A reply came back a few hours later.

‘Sorry it took so long to answer. Busy morning. Looking forward to tonight. – J’

“Must be good,” Blackwater said, after Royce read Jacob’s text. “Been working with you a whole month and never once saw you smile like that.”

“Like what?” Royce asked.

“Like you just won the lottery,” Blackwater pulled his safety goggles down over his eyes; he and the twins had been installing insulation, while Henry cut ceramic tiles for the bathrooms and the backsplash in the kitchen. They could hear the pop of nail guns as Vernon and Duke laid down shingles on the new roof. “What’s got you so happy?”

“Oh – I was just looking at my calendar,” Royce lied. “We’re right on schedule with the build.”

“Uh-huh.” Blackwater nodded, giving the impression that he didn’t believe Royce for a second, and that he had some mystic, Native American way of seeing “I had sex with Jacob in the woods yesterday and will be fucking him tonight” printed all over Royce’s face. “Well, we’ve still got a way to go, so don’t get too excited.” Tugging on his gloves, he headed outside to grab a few more rolls of insulation off the back of his truck.

When they finished for the day, Royce took a quick shower and changed into a clean pair of jeans and a button-down shirt a shade of plum that enhanced the green of his eyes. In the past month, he had purchased new sheets for the camper’s bed, along with a thick mattress cover and fluffy pillows for his own comfort. He changed the linens in anticipation for what he hoped would be a very active evening.

He still had a lot to do in preparation for Jacob’s visit. Jumping in the truck, he drove into Burnaby City and paid a visit to the supermarket. They had a household section where he found scented pillar candles, but the items at the top of his shopping list could only be found in the pharmacy department. Normally, he would get his sex supplies from special, high-end boutiques. Today, he had to settle on a standard water-based lube and condoms. As long as they work, that’s all that matters.

His last stop was Piper’s. He wanted to present Jacob with a delicious meal. He had tried a few restaurants in the area but he always came back to this one. They had great food, but they also had Lori Ann.

“There she is!” Royce said, as he walked through the door to Piper’s and saw the chubby little woman coming out of the dining area. From the moment he first met her, Royce had found himself unable to resist Lori Ann’s no-nonsense manner or her charming Texas lilt. He began to make a point of coming in during her shift, if only to hear the latest stories about the local community.
